Amarillo Slim, with his full name Thomas Austin Preston Jr. He was born December 31, 1928, is one of the well-known professional gambler with his unique poker skill and betting skills. He is a former champion in the 1972 WSOP and was inducted to the Poker Hall Of Fame in 1992. He is one of the outstanding poker players along with Doyle Brunson who was a poker legend as well as Johnny Chan who tied them both. One thing that Amarillo Slim is known for is he's kind of betting that is very odd, yet wins the game.
With his cowboy hat and fashion, Amarillo Slim has been also a colorful character in the world of poker. After winning the 1972 WSOP, he continued to play poker just like Doyle Brunson, his pokermate who brought Texas Hold 'Em to Las Vegas tables. Amarillo Slim is also known for his poker advice to new players and for those seeking his advice. Here are some of his "words of wisdom" :
1. Play the players more than you play the cards.
2. Choose the right opponents. If you don't see a sucker at the table, you're it.
3. Be tight and aggressive. Don't play many hands, but when you do, prepare yourself to move in.
4. Never gamble a money you can't afford to lose.
5. Always observe while playing poker.
6. Diversify your play so other can't predict you easily.
7. Predict others move.
8. Play fast when in a slow pace, slowly when you're in fast pace.
Although Amarillo Slim doesn't play publicly anymore, he has his own business running. He has also written some books about poker entitled “Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People: The Memoirs of the Greatest Gambler Who Ever Lived”. He has taught in his book on how to enjoy life while playing poker and to reminisce every moment in life to have a more fulfilling venue and experience.
